Choosing audio hardware for distributed meetings
Audio quality affects meeting outcomes more than video does. A call where people mishear each other produces decisions that have to be remade.

If a distributed team upgrades one thing, it should be microphones rather than cameras. Listeners tolerate a soft or poorly lit image without much cost. They do not tolerate audio that requires effort to parse: the listening fatigue accumulates over a day of calls, and the practical result is people disengaging or asking for things to be repeated.
The specifications that matter
- Microphone pickup pattern. Cardioid or noise-cancelling patterns reject room noise from the sides and rear. Omnidirectional pickup is only appropriate for a shared conference unit, not an individual on a call.
- Wired versus wireless. Wireless adds a charging routine and a failure mode mid-call. Wired USB removes both. For someone in back-to-back meetings, wired is the lower-maintenance choice, which is the opposite of the usual assumption.
- Sidetone. The headset feeds a little of your own voice back into the earcup. Without it people unconsciously raise their voice. It is rarely advertised prominently and matters more than most listed features.
- On-ear versus over-ear. Over-ear isolates better; on-ear stays comfortable longer in warm climates. This is a genuine tradeoff rather than a quality tier.
What not to pay for
Active noise cancellation is designed for the listener, not the caller, and does nothing for how you sound to others. High sample rates above 48kHz are irrelevant because conferencing platforms downsample aggressively. Studio condenser microphones are the wrong tool in an untreated room, where they capture reflections a headset boom would never pick up.
A reasonable buying order
Start with a wired USB headset with a boom microphone and sidetone. That solves the majority of the problem at modest cost. Only move to a separate dynamic microphone and interface if someone is producing recorded material rather than attending meetings, at which point the requirements change completely.
